November 2022 - Healthy Relationships

Thank you to all of the families who checked out our first blog post in October and tried the positive mindset activities at home. We love hearing about the things you do and conversations you are having at home with your children to build these skills! Having a positive mindset is such an important skill to teach our students as they continue to try new things and face new challenges.

In November we are focusing on building and maintaining healthy relationships. At Nelson Heights School, this means understanding the characteristics and behaviours of good friends, conflict resolution, as well as building our own skills to be a good friend to those around us. As we know, middle school is a time of change and growth, especially as students continue to learn more about themselves, and this can have an impact on the relationships around us. These conversations about healthy relationships will be ongoing throughout the school year, but we believe it is important to have a good understanding of how to build and maintain healthy relationships that we can continue to build off of and refer back to.

Here are some easy tips to be a good friend to others:

  • Be a good listener.
  • Give your friend space when they need it.
  • Be forgiving.
  • Show interest in things they are also interested in.
  • Most importantly, be the kind of friend that you would want to have.
